Wicker Park Dinner When You Haven’t Made a Reservation

You want dinner in Wicker Park tonight, and there is no booking in your calendar. Tortello and Handlebar explicitly do not take reservations; Piece keeps parties of five or fewer walk-in. That gives a small party three verified ways to start a plan: counter-service pasta, a menu with substantive vegan choices, or a pizza table with a time limit. Choose according to the meal you want, then check the restaurant directly. A walk-in policy tells you how seating works; it does not tell you a table is free.

Choose the food and the seating format together

  • A pasta main ordered at a counter-service restaurant: Tortello.
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, with complete-party seating: Handlebar.
  • Pizza for a party of five or fewer: Piece, with a 90-minute table window.

Tortello: pasta without an advance dinner booking

Tortello’s official site describes it as a casual counter-service restaurant and states walk-ins only, with no reservations. That makes it a useful choice when the missing booking is the main obstacle and pasta is still the meal you want. The posted $25 tortelli list burrata, butter, sage and hazelnuts; cacio e pepe offers another pasta direction at $24.

Choose the main first, then decide whether you want the separately priced focaccia with ricotta and honey. The absence of a reservation does not turn that starter into a compulsory part of dinner. Tortello normally opens at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with a listed 9 p.m. close. Those are venue hours, not a verified last-order cutoff, so confirm food service if arriving near closing.

Handlebar: arrive together, then choose from different diets

Handlebar earns its place for the small group whose menu preferences are less uniform than its headcount. The official menu includes vegan chili mac and mushroom quesabirria tacos alongside vegetarian dishes and a separately identified fish section. That gives you substantive choices to review before arriving, rather than relying on a vague promise that a restaurant accommodates every diet.

For specific price context, its Tuesday special lists mushroom “chicken” and a vegan Belgian waffle at $16, with a choice of plant-based or dairy butter. That price belongs to Tuesday; the main web menu does not publish prices for every dish. Its house rules say no reservations and no seating of incomplete parties. Have everyone arrive together, and confirm the actual evening’s menu and charges before settling the order.

Piece: walk-in pizza for a small table

Piece makes the headcount rule explicit: five or fewer are walk-in, while limited reservations are available for six or more. This is therefore a useful no-booking option for a couple or a small group, with a different planning route if someone adds another guest.

Its regular pizza menu starts a small plain pie at $19, with toppings separately priced. Piece estimates a small serves one or two; use that as menu context rather than a guarantee that it covers your appetite. The individual lunch pizza offer ends at 4 p.m., so evening orders use the regular sizes. All tables have a 90-minute limit. Choose Piece when that defined pizza dinner fits the evening, not when you expect to occupy the table for an open-ended reunion.

Make the flexible part of the evening explicit

Start with the exact address and everyone’s arrival time. Then decide what you will change if the restaurant cannot seat you: the time, the meal format or the venue. The three choices here solve the absence of an advance reservation in different ways; none establishes a short wait.

Our pizza-for-two guide compares topping and size decisions, while the vegan-friend dinner guide explores mixed-diet orders in more detail. Use those if the food choice is the part still unresolved.

Tortello is the direct pasta choice. Handlebar is useful when the table needs several substantive dietary directions. Piece works for a small pizza party that accepts the table window. Pick the format you would enjoy even if you had remembered to book somewhere.
