Match the start to your evening
- The earliest dinner service here: Avec West Loop.
- A 4 p.m. start in Fulton Market: The Publican.
- Separate mains from 5 p.m. on weekdays: Gaijin.
This guide covers the West Loop and Fulton Market, rather than implying all three are on Fulton Market’s main street. Compare the exact addresses with your onward destination. An early opening can help you start sooner; it cannot shorten the distance between dinner and the rest of the night.
| Restaurant | Verified dinner start | A possible food order | USD food subtotal | Added charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avec West Loop | 3:30 p.m., daily | Hummus $14 and deluxe focaccia $24 | $38 for two shared dishes | 3.5%: $1.33 |
| The Publican | 4 p.m., daily | Seafood stew | $37 for one listed dish | 3.5%: $1.30 |
| Gaijin | Tuesday–Friday, 5 p.m.; dinner menu all day on weekends | Tofu okonomiyaki | $19 for one listed dish | 3%: $0.57 |
These are examples of order formats, not equivalent meals or a timing package. Drinks, further dishes, dessert, tax and tip are extra. Planning amounts after the posted charges are $39.33, $38.30 and $19.57 respectively. Gaijin is closed Monday.
The Publican: a 4 p.m. meal with a choice of commitment
The Publican’s dinner service begins at 4 p.m. Its sample menu lists a $37 seafood stew with clams, mussels, shrimp, halibut, fennel, tomato-chile broth and sourdough. That gives one diner a clear dish around which to plan, rather than defaulting to a family-style feast because the restaurant is known for shared orders.
For an evening with a later appointment, keep the distinction between an à la carte dish and the chef’s menu in view. The latter is a multi-course option requiring full-table participation; it asks for a different commitment. There is no published duration in the evidence used here, so ask directly if you are considering it. The dinner page also calls its menu a sample. Confirm the day’s choice, especially if the stew is the reason you selected the restaurant.

Gaijin: separate mains after the weekday service break
Gaijin makes the opening-time distinction particularly important: Tuesday through Friday, its daytime service ends at 2:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 5. Weekend dinner-menu availability begins earlier, according to the menu. For a 4 p.m. weekday meal, start with Avec or The Publican.
The $19 tofu Osaka-style okonomiyaki lists mushrooms and spinach alongside Phoenix Bean tofu. Choosing individual pancakes lets each person make a main-dish decision without negotiating every shared plate. That is an ordering advantage, not evidence of a particular preparation speed.
Use the restaurant’s official reservation route and describe your onward plans. Its FAQ confirms bookable table or chef’s-counter seats. If a later start makes you feel rushed before you even arrive, do not force Gaijin into the schedule; choose it when the rest of the evening leaves room.

Work backward from the appointment
First, establish the time you need to arrive at your next stop. Check its actual entrance and compare it with the restaurant’s address using a current route for the way you intend to travel. We have not supplied a universal walking allowance because the destination changes the answer.
Next, leave room for the meal and tell the restaurant when you need to leave. Ask about the day’s dishes and any booking conditions. Do not treat a booked arrival time as a booked finishing time, or a few plates as proof that food will arrive together.
Finally, make the order fit the plan. A shared starter-and-bread order, a stew and an individual pancake are different amounts and kinds of food. Add what you need, but keep the change in spending and time commitment in mind. Dessert can be a decision you make later, rather than a course promised in advance.
Let the clock choose the shortlist
Start with Avec when beginning at 3:30 matters, The Publican for 4 p.m. in Fulton Market, or Gaijin when a 5 p.m. weekday start leaves comfortable room. Book the actual date, explain the deadline and choose the order with staff. Choose a start that leaves you room to enjoy dinner. If the schedule already feels tight, change the restaurant or the order before you commit.
