Let The Kitchen Choose: Three Dinner Menus Around Little Italy

Letting the kitchen choose dinner should still leave you in charge of the budget. Around Little Italy, DaiLo posts two named price tiers, Quetzal offers a curated menu with a starting price, and Bar Isabel builds a tasting menu around an agreed spend. Those are different commitments, even before drinks. This guide compares the current terms at three College Street restaurants, with two-person food totals and separate pairing costs, so you can decide which version of handing over the menu suits your evening.

Prices checked October 14, 2026. These are chef-selected food menus, not complete bills: tax, tip, drinks and additions are excluded. Quetzal’s “from” price is a starting point, not a ceiling. Quetzal adds 20% gratuity for five or six guests; Bar Isabel adds 20% service for six or more. Food examples below show each restaurant’s current à la carte direction; they are not guaranteed tasting courses.

DaiLo For Two Clearly Priced Food Tiers

DaiLo’s official menu makes the first decision straightforward: DaiLo’s Choice is CAD 125 per person and Premium is CAD 160. For two, that is CAD 250 or CAD 320 in food before tax, tip and drinks. Wine pairings are separately listed at CAD 75 or CAD 105 per person; ask how the pairing choices match the food tiers and confirm the final plan with staff.

The à la carte menu gives a sense of the cooking: Hakka brown wontons combine pork and shrimp with XO sauce, while the whole fried trout is listed with nahm jim, green-curry aioli and soy glaze. Neither dish is promised in the chef-selected meal. Choose 503 College Street when you want a posted tier to anchor the conversation. The official site’s OpenTable widget handles reservations. Dinner starts at 5 p.m., Tuesday–Sunday; a fixed course count and late kitchen cutoff were not verified.

Quetzal For A Shared Menu With The Pairings Priced Separately

At Quetzal, the curated menu starts at CAD 160 per guest. A beverage pairing is CAD 140 per person and the non-alcoholic pairing is CAD 100 per person, each additional. For two, the starting food-and-non-alcoholic-pairing subtotal is CAD 520; with the beverage pairing it is CAD 600, before tax, tip and any additions. Decide on drinks as deliberately as the food.

The à la carte menu lists sikil pak with pumpkin seed, poblano and cotija, and an Oaxacan lamb empanada. These are examples, not an itinerary for your tasting. At 419 College Street, the FAQ says you can choose the curated menu on arrival, but everyone in the reservation must participate; it is served family style. Reserve for Wednesday–Sunday dinner, from 6 p.m. Read the terms carefully: cancellation, no-show and party-size changes within 24 hours carry a CAD 100-per-guest charge.

Bar Isabel When You Want To Agree The Budget At The Table

Bar Isabel’s information page takes a more adjustable approach. Its tasting menus are available daily at CAD 85–150 per person, depending on requests and appetite; discuss the budget and preferences with staff on the day. For a pair, the stated food range is CAD 170–300. No advance pre-order is required. Set the number you are comfortable spending before leaving the rest of the meal to the restaurant.

At 797 College Street, the Spanish-focused à la carte menu includes grilled beef tongue with mojo rojo, octopus in several portion sizes and Basque cake with hot sherry cream. Use those dishes to decide whether the Spanish menu appeals, then discuss what goes into your own meal. Reservations are strongly recommended. If dietary requirements shape the evening, ask ahead: its information page notes limited vegetarian and vegan options. For parties of six or more, the 20% service charge changes the subtotal; no further gratuity is prompted for those parties.

Choose The Commitment You Actually Want

Choose DaiLo when a named food tier helps you settle the budget before arriving. Start with Quetzal when the whole table wants its curated menu and is comfortable with the starting price, pairing choices and cancellation terms. Bar Isabel suits the pair who wants to discuss a spending range before staff builds the order. In all three cases, ask what the current chef-selected meal includes rather than expecting a dish from a published review to appear.

These restaurants sit along College Street in and around Little Italy, at the addresses shown; they are not three adjoining stops. For a dinner where you choose the dishes yourself, browse Little Italy meals beyond pasta and our neighbourhood coverage.
