Kensington Dinner For Two: Pick Dishes Or Choose Six Courses

For dinner in Kensington Market, decide how much of the ordering you want to do yourselves. Grey Gardens lets you build around pasta or larger dishes, Sunnys Chinese gives you noodles and plates to share, and Hawker offers a plant-based six-course commitment with a stated price. Choose the format you both want before making the reservation. These three addresses also have different service days, so start with the date before settling on a menu.

Grey Gardens: For Choosing Your Own Dishes

Start with Grey Gardens when choosing the dishes yourselves is part of the appeal. Rigati with bianco ragu, rapini and lemon is CAD 26; ravioli with shrimp, tomato and shishito is also CAD 26. Those choices put two pasta orders at CAD 52 before any starter, wine or dessert. Neither should be assumed vegetarian from the pasta name alone.

You can also build the meal differently: the current menu lists sea bream at CAD 45 with corn, kimchi and chive, and a half chicken at CAD 45 with cranberry beans, Nardello peppers and tahini. Decide which dishes appeal before treating the table total as a budget. The kitchen lists Monday–Saturday, 5–10 p.m.; the last Monday of each month has a separately advertised six-course Grey Monday event. Check which format your date offers.

Sunnys Chinese: For Agreeing On A Shared Order

Sunnys makes sense when choosing dishes together is part of dinner. One possible starting order is dan dan noodle at CAD 23 with ya cai, ground pork and peanut; orange chicken at CAD 27 with onion, pepper and Shaoxing wine; and steamed jasmine rice at CAD 4. That is CAD 54 for the table before additions. Rice is a separate line, not an automatic accompaniment to every plate.

The menu needs a closer read for a mixed-preference pair. Mapo tofu includes dry-aged beef, Yunnan grilled carrots list fish sauce, and broccoli lists oyster sauce. Vegetable names do not settle dietary suitability. The address is 60 Kensington Ave, with entry through the indoor hallway in Kensington Mall, according to the restaurant. Its linked booking page lists dinner Monday, Wednesday and Sunday to 10 p.m., and Thursday–Saturday to 10:30; Tuesday is not listed.

Hawker: For A Plant-Based Tasting With A Known Food Price

Hawker removes the dish-by-dish negotiation if both of you want a plant-based tasting. The regular six-course experience is CAD 75 per guest, with a seating of one hour and 45 minutes. The Chef's Table is a separate CAD 85-per-guest experience at a counter overlooking the kitchen, with two hours allocated. For two, that means CAD 150 or CAD 170 in food, before beverages, tax and gratuity.

Check the commitment as carefully as the food price. Both listings state that cancellations within 24 hours incur the full per-person charge plus a 20% service charge. Read the actual terms before confirming. Hawker also publishes an à la carte dinner menu, including eggplant with sweet fern, chaga and oyster mushroom, but those descriptions do not promise particular tasting courses. The restaurant's website lists dinner Wednesday–Sunday from five, last seating at nine and the kitchen closing at 9:30 p.m.; use those limits when planning a later meal.

Go Here: 291 Augusta Ave. Read the official Hawker dinner menu and compare the two tasting experiences on its linked booking page.

Let The Date And The Order Decide

On Sunday, focus on Sunnys or Hawker; Grey Gardens lists no Sunday service. On Tuesday, Grey Gardens is the only option among these three with posted dinner service. For the widest comparison, choose Wednesday–Saturday, then decide between pasta-led choices, shared Chinese dishes or a plant-based tasting.

For a pair keeping control of the order, start with Grey Gardens. For shared noodles and plates, compare Sunnys' actual ingredients before deciding the selection. Book Hawker when the six-course format and cancellation commitment suit both diners. If a chef-selected evening appeals but Kensington is not essential, compare our Little Italy tasting-menu plans. Coming earlier in the day calls for our Kensington Market lunch guide.
