The short version
- For a vegetarian meal and a table enquiry: King’s Café.
- For an individual takeaway order: Gus Tacos, Kensington.
- For fish and chips with either service format: Fresco’s; check the current price when ordering.
Compare the lunch, not just a snack price
Prices below are CAD per person, before drinks, dessert, tax and tip. Gus’s figure comes from its online ordering listing; it is not a verified dine-in price and excludes any checkout fees. King’s figure is from the menu currently embedded on its website. Posted figures can change.
| Lunch plan | One-person menu example | Posted food price | Where to eat |
|---|---|---|---|
| King’s Café | Vegetable curry with mushrooms combination, with listed accompaniments | 19.49 | Ask the restaurant about a table |
| Gus Tacos Kensington | Chicken burrito | 15 online | Order for takeaway and choose a destination |
| Fresco’s Fish & Chips | Haddock or cod and chips | Confirm directly | Dining in and takeaway are both advertised |
The figures describe different meals. King’s lists a combination and Gus lists a single burrito; neither price establishes what will be enough for your appetite. Fresco’s current price needs direct confirmation, so the table leaves it open.
King’s Café: let lunch be the seated part of the afternoon
192 Augusta Avenue · Kensington Market
King’s Café is our choice when a vegetarian meal is the priority and you would rather enquire about a table than plan around eating outdoors. Its website supplies a reservations number, 416-591-1340, and lists weekday and weekend service from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The restaurant’s posted menu does something useful for lunch: it labels each combination as designed for one person. The vegetable curry with mushrooms option is CAD19.49, with a spring roll, two soy nuggets, salad in a bento box and soup of the day alongside. Those accompaniments matter: a combination price tells you more than the cost of one appetiser.
Choose it when you want one order to organise a vegetarian lunch. If you prefer noodles, the menu also lists udon soup with tofu, mushrooms and vegetables at CAD14.99. Call ahead if sitting together is central to the plan.
Gus Tacos: choose the takeaway, then choose its destination
225 Augusta Avenue · Kensington Market
Gus is a useful choice when you want your own order and already have somewhere to eat it. The Kensington branch page confirms the address and daily 11 a.m.–9 p.m. service; its online-ordering route supports pickup.
The official menu offers more than tacos. A burrito comes in a flour tortilla with beans, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, chipotle mayo and a choice of protein. The 225 Augusta ordering listing shows a chicken burrito at CAD15. That is a posted online figure: check the pickup checkout for your actual total rather than using it as a promise about counter pricing.
Starting with a burrito keeps the order easy to discuss: everyone chooses a filling and checks one item price. Taco sizes and appetites make a taco count a less useful starting point without more information. Takeaway is the verified service format used here; arrange your eating place before collecting the food.
Fresco’s: decide whether the fish and chips should travel
201 Augusta Avenue · Kensington Market
Fresco’s offers a useful middle position: its official site explicitly advertises dining in, takeaway and delivery. You can make the meal the point of a stop, or collect it when eating elsewhere suits your afternoon.
Its posted menu lists haddock, cod and halibut with chips, plus an extra-crisp Miss Vickie’s batter option. Those are menu choices, not our verdict on the fish. Start by deciding which fish you want and whether any additions matter, then ask for the current total.
If a firm spending cap is your main concern, call 416-546-4557 for the current price before heading over. We could verify the dishes and service formats, but not resolve the differing prices on its published menus. The contact page gives the same number for dining and takeout. Ask about seating for your party at the same time if you want to eat there.
Put the eating place into the plan
These addresses keep lunch on Augusta Avenue, within the neighbourhood identified by Destination Toronto. Pick the one that suits your meal, then let browsing fit around it. There is no need to order a second lunch simply because another recommended restaurant is nearby.
For a seated lunch, contact King’s or Fresco’s and establish whether the restaurant can accommodate your party. For takeaway, name the destination before you collect food—home, your accommodation or another place you know you can use. A nearby café’s tables belong to its own service; an outdoor lunch requires an actual plan for the weather and seating.
For this shortlist, 11:30 a.m. is a sensible earliest meeting time because King’s starts then. Confirm directly if you are planning an early arrival at Fresco’s. If friends want different dishes, agree whether eating together or ordering separately matters more; the addresses alone cannot solve that tradeoff.
Choose the meal you actually want
Start with King’s if a vegetarian combination and a seated meal suit the afternoon. Choose Gus when you want individual takeaway orders and already know where they will be eaten. For fish and chips, ask Fresco’s for the current price and the service format you want. Lunch works better when the place to eat is part of the choice.
How we chose: We checked official branch pages, restaurant-posted menus and an authorised ordering listing on 13 October 2026. We have not visited or sampled these meals.
